William “Haystacks” Calhoun grew up on a farm in rural McKinney. He is known as one of the most famous pioneer wrestlers for the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) network. Calhoun was one of the largest wrestlers in history at 6’4” and over 600 pounds. Local legend says that he would eat a dozen eggs, a pound of bacon, a dozen pancakes, a quart of orange juice, and a whole pot of coffee for breakfast.
Calhoun was discovered by a talent scout when lifting and moving cows across the field in McKinney. He initially performed under the name “Country Boy” Calhoun as a feature act on the television show House Party, hosted by Art Linkletter. His act played up the hillbilly stereotype as he threw full bales of hay around the set. Over his successful 30-year wrestling career, he kept his hillbilly persona, wearing a beard, bib overalls, and a horseshoe necklace.
He retired due to complications with diabetes and died in 1989 at the age of 55. Calhoun was posthumously inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2017.
