Herb Ellis was born and raised in Farmersville. He first learned to play the harmonica on his family’s farm when he was two years old, and taught himself to play the guitar when he was nine. He learned the basic chords, then discovered his love of jazz, where a musician can improvise and use variations of notes to make their own chords.
Ellis was a part of many different bands and trios before going solo. He performed with jazz greats such as Ella Fitzgerald, Oscar Peterson, Stan Getz, Lionel Hampton, and Dizzy Gillespie. He was inducted into the Jazz Hall of Fame in 1994 and died in 2010.

Three Little McKinney Girls Invited to Play in Texas Building at World’s Fair Next Week Will Leave for St Louis Tomorrow.
The above is the picture of three of Miss Susie Leddy’s music pupils who have been invited to give a Piano Recital in the Texas Building at the World's Fair during the coming week. Little Miss Christelle Oneal and Fama Massie have been under Miss Leddy’s instruction for about eighteen months. The other little one, Ruby Phelps, who is only seven years of age, has had lessons only a few months. In view of the fact that only two other children in the State have received such an invitation it is quite an honor for the children and a decided complement to Miss Leddy’s ability as a teacher. She leaves with the pupils for St. Louis, Saturday October 22.
